How Is Permanent Disability Determined?
Permanent disability is evaluated after your doctor decides that your injury or illness is not likely to change. The doctor might say that you have reached maximal medical improvement (MMI) or that your condition is permanent and stationary (P&S). The doctor will then send a report to the workers’ comp claims administrator, indicating that you have a permanent disability.
The doctor will also assess whether any of your disability resulted from anything other than your work injury — for example, a previous condition. Because so much depends on the doctor’s assessments, it is important that you are examined by a doctor with expertise in evaluating and treating your specific injury or illness.
