California officer killed in work-related accident

While all jobs hold some degree of risk of injury, those who work as police officers in California and across the country actively go toward danger as part of their job responsibilities. Unfortunately, they may suffer serious injuries or even lose their lives in a work-related accident. In fact, family members and friends are still mourning the loss of a veteran patrol officer after he was killed, allegedly by a drunk driver.

The incident that led to the 53-year-old California Highway Patrol officer's death happened during the afternoon hours of a day in early April. The motorcycle officer had reportedly pulled over a sedan onto the shoulder of the road. Unfortunately, police claim that a 36-year-old male driver allowed his vehicle to cross onto the shoulder, striking both the officer and the vehicle that he had pulled over.

The officer was transported to the hospital where he later died from the injuries he suffered in the collision, while no one in the stopped sedan was injured. Police say that the driver of the vehicle that struck the officer was under the influence. A spokesperson for CHP claims that there is evidence that the driver engaged in gross negligence both before and during the accident on behalf. As a result, the driver is now faces multiple charges, including murder and DUI.

The man's family is now left mourning his unexpected death as a result of the work-related accident. Often, the financial consequences of such a loss also create a financial burden as a result of medical bills, lost wages and funeral expenses. While family members may choose to file a wrongful death lawsuit against the driver believed to be responsible for the California crash, they may also be entitled to workers' compensation insurance benefits. An attorney with experience with the compensation process can ensure that the man's family are aware of the potential benefits and help them pursue fair compensation.
