Family may qualify for workers' compensation after fatal accident

All families in California and across the country are likely aware that they could experience an unexpected loss. Despite this knowledge, few people are truly prepared for such an event. Unfortunately, one out-of-state family may need workers' compensation insurance benefits to help them cope with the financial complications the recent death of a man may create.

The incident happened at a suburban high school. According to reports, the 50-year-old male victim came into contact with live electrical wires shortly before 1 p.m. on a day in July. The man was transported to the hospital for treatment.

Unfortunately, he was pronounced dead approximately one hour after the incident happened. An autopsy confirmed that his death was the result of electrocution and deemed it an accidental. Representatives for the school where the accident happened did not respond to a request for comment.

While the local police are investigating the incident, it is likely that the Occupational Safety and Health Administration will also investigate; such investigations typically work to determine whether any health and safety standards were violated in the events leading up to an incident. Even the safest workers in California and across the country are still at risk of being the victim of a workplace accident. Though employers are required to provide workers' compensation insurance coverage, some victims -- including surviving family members in the event of a fatality -- may feel unprepared to face insurance negotiations in the wake of such an incident. As such, professionals with experience with the compensation process can help them.
