Workplace accident results in fatality in California

On Behalf of | Feb 13, 2020 | Workers' Compensation |

There are a variety of dangerous occupations in the United States — often those most people would not generally consider when thinking of work-related dangers are the jobs that have the most risks. In fact, a recent workplace accident in California shows how certain occupations can be dangerous. As a result of the accident, a man lost his life.

The incident happened one morning on a day in late January. According to reports, a 37-year-old tree trimmer was working for Clements Tree Service Inc. to remove trees for a homeowners’ association. Unfortunately, reports indicate that a falling tree struck the man, causing traumatic injuries to his body and head.

Reports indicate that when rescue workers arrived at the scene, the man was in cardiac arrest. Unfortunately, he died at the scene. The incident is now under investigation by both the local sheriff’s office and the California Division of Occupational Safety and Health. A representative for Cal/OSHA says that the investigation will include training and worker safety procedures. The company could face fines, citations or some combination of both if investigators discover that violations of workplace standards led to the accident.

Unfortunately, even when employers and employees follow all recommended safety and health standards, unexpected events can occur ultimately causing a workplace accident. As such, employers are required to provide workers’ compensation insurance coverage that can help workers with certain expenses stemming from accidents related to work. In the event of a fatality, these benefits can extend to certain family members. An attorney with experience with such benefits can help families in California fully understand their options as they seek fair compensation.
