For police officers in California and across the country, what should likely simply be a routine encounter can turn deadly. Unfortunately, even law enforcement officers who are always vigilant to protect both their safety as well as the safety of those they may encounter while completing their duties can become involved in an unpredictable situation. In fact, an officer was killed and another critically injured in a recent work-related incident in another state.

The incident reportedly happened during the morning hours of a day in late June. According to reports, an officer conducted what reports describe as a regular traffic stop. While details of the incident are unclear, the officer reportedly called for back up after running the alleged driver’s information in their system.

A second officer arrived at the scene. Reports claim that the driver refused to comply with officer requests, including to step out of his vehicle. After the officers used a stun gun and tear gas, the 33-year-old driver allegedly pulled out a gun and shot the two men in their heads at close range. He then walked to another vehicle that was waiting for him. Both he and his alleged accomplice have since been taken into custody and charged.

One of the officers died the next day while the other is listed in critical condition as a result of the work-related incident. Despite knowing of the dangers that their loved ones face at work, families of law enforcement officers are still likely unprepared for this type of news. While one man is left to recover from the critical injuries, another family must now plan a funeral. Both likely face significant financial burdens as a result. Though they may be entitled to workers’ compensation insurance benefits, many people in California are confused by the process; however, there are experienced attorneys who can help them.
