Workers’ Compensation For First Responders

In California, first responders are eligible for workers’ compensation benefits that are not necessarily available to people in other types of employment. However, it is not a foregone conclusion that the insurance company will treat you fairly if you were injured or suffered a work-related illness in the line of duty.

At the Law Offices of Antony E. Gluck, PC, we have extensive experience in these matters, and we proudly help safety officers and first responders get the maximum available benefits after injuries on the job. With offices in San Bernardino, we represent first responders throughout Los Angeles, the South Bay, the Inland Empire and all of Southern California.

You make a difference in people’s lives every day. We want to do the same for you. Contact us for a free consultation with an experienced workers’ compensation lawyer. We can help.

Understanding Your Benefits After A Work Injury

In general, workers’ compensation provides medical benefits, disability benefits and occupational retraining benefits. For first responders specifically, the law presumes that certain injuries and illnesses are work-related and are therefore covered by workers’ compensation. These work-related conditions include:

  • Heart disease
  • Hernia
  • Cancer, including leukemia
  • Biochemical exposures
  • Bloodborne infectious diseases
  • Meningitis
  • Lyme disease

For officers who wear a duty belt, the law also presumes that certain back injuries and lumbar issues are work-related. However, an officer must have been employed for at least five years for this presumption to apply.

Additionally, first responders are eligible for full salary through workers’ compensation for one year after a job-related injury. The workers’ comp wage benefit for other kinds of workers is capped at two-thirds salary.
